Thereās never a dull moment living in the mountains, and last night was no exception. At exactly 2:30 AM, we were jolted awake by what sounded like someoneāor somethingātrying to break into the house. The thud of paws on the deck, the creak of the gate, and the unmistakable sound of claws had us flying out of bed.
As we peeked out the window, we spotted her: a full-grown mama bear with her curious cub in tow, standing right on our front porch. She was massive, graceful, and shockingly quiet for her size (aside from the initial leap that nearly gave us a heart attack). And hereās the wildest partāthey came straight for the hummingbird feeder, which I always bring inside before dark. Somehow, they knew where it usually hangs. Incredible and eerie all at once.
It was a reminder of how wild and magical life in the mountains can beāwhere your front porch can become a bearās midnight buffet. Ā
( I tried to capture a picture of the baby from our video but it just looks like a blob :-) )
